About 26/2

26/2 (Twenty Six Postures and 2 Breathing exercises) is a series of Yoga Poses made popular by Bikram Choudhury during the 1970s in Los Angeles. Choudhury originally brought the 84 posture yoga series from the Ghosh Institute in Calcutta. From this, he created a 26 posture and 2 breathing exercise yogic prescription for his American classes.

This posture series can be presented in 60 and 90 minute variations; the 90 minute class is regarded as a particularly therapeutic series of postures. The first half of the class consists of standing postures. After a mid-class two minute Savasana, the instructor leads participants through a floor series. The class ends with a final breathing exercise.

26/2 strengthens muscles, promotes balance and flexibility, and improves the mind/body connection. Additionally, the practice strengthens cardio function, internal organs, and builds emotional and mental wellbeing. It is beneficial for immunity, endurance, sleep, injury prevention, and increases life force energy in the practitioner.

About Melissa

Melissa Abbott has studied Iyengar and Anusara Hatha Yoga in the 1990’s and later took her first 26/2 Hot Yoga class 10 years ago with Suzanne Elliott in Merritt Island, FL, becoming a Raja Hot Core Hatha Yoga 500 hour Teacher in 2016 with Craig Villani. In 2017/18 Melissa studied the Barkan Method of Hot Yoga with Jimmy Barkan becoming a Level 2 Barkan Hot Vinyasa Instructor, and 2019 Adi Westerman’s Teacher Training for 26/2 Plus ( the classic 26 with 2nd set variations). Melissa is a member of the Original Hot Yoga Asso OHYA and a Hot Yoga Instructor,  teaching 26/2 and Hot Vinyasa at Steam House Hot Yoga & Pilates in Epping NH and Blue Yoga Group in Swampscott, MA. A long time meditator, studying Siddha Yoga Meditation at Shree Muktananda Ashram in S. Fallsburg NY, Melissa has a Visionary Tantric Meditation & Yoga Nidra Podcast “Melissa Abbott Yoga & Meditation” on Spotify, YouTube, iTunes, and Podbean.
